Credit by Exam Policy

Definition:  Credit by Examination is validation of the candidate's competencies and the awarding of course credit based upon demonstration of satisfactory achievement of course objectives by examination and, for clinical courses, completion of specified clinical activities.

The following courses in the Flexible Process tracks my be completed by CBE:

  • LVN track-NURS 3312, all semester II, and all semester III courses in sequence
  • RN track-All courses in sequence.

Eligibility:  Students who are accepted into or registered for the undergraduate Flexible Process options or the Early Master's program are eligible to take CBE for designated courses if the following conditions have been met:

  1. All prerequisites for the course being challenged have been completed. 
  2. Students have not been enrolled in the specific course previously.
  3. Students have not failed the specific CBE, or the course previously

Registration fo CBE:  The student must register for the course in the sequence designated in the program/catalogue.  The CBE process is outlined next.

Process for Completion of CBE: Students wishing to take a course by CBE will:

  1. Consult with the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Programs no later than midterm of the semester in which the examination will be taken.
  2. Register for the examination with the Office of the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Programs .
  3. Register for the course for the following semester.
  4. Submit non-refundable fee to the Office of the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Programs at the time of registration for the CBE (NB fees are subject to change without notice).
    $50 for clinical courses    $25 for non-clinical course
  5. Obtain study/course materials to include:
    • General web syllabi, which are available under schedules and syllabi for flexible process program on the web.
    • Course packets, which are abailable from the Office of the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Programs for a printing fee.
  6. Prepare for and take the examination as scheduled.

CBE schedules are posted under schedules and syllabi for the flexible process program during the semester proceeding the semester during which the examination would be challenged.

All CBE activites for a course (examination, assignments/papers, and clinical activites if applicable must be completed successfully as scheduled before credit is given for the entire CBE.

Grading for CBE: Examination grades will be available on the day of testing or emailed to students within 48 hours of taking the examination.

Final Course CBE grades are reported to the Office of the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Programs within 2 weeks from the date when the final element of the CBE is submitted.

The offical grade for the course CBE will be posted to the student's transcript during the semester following successful completion of the CBE.

  • If successful, student will be dropped from course and will not pay course tuition.
  • If unsuccessful, the student must take the course and pay tuition to take and earn credit for the course.
  • CBE cannot be repeated.
  • Grades are final.  Because CBE is an assessment of knowledge and competencies acquired elsewhere, no instruction beyond the examination blueprint and an outline of course requirements will be provided to CBE candidates.
