Credit by exam is a clep process that includes an exam for each course and, for clinical courses, will also include some type of application activity (such as a physical exam demonstration, management portfolio, teaching paper, community assessment paper or family assessment paper).
- Credit by examination is available to students who:
- Have been accepted into Flexible Process and/or are current Flex students
- Have met the prerequisites for the course being challenged
- Have not been enrolled in the course being challenged previously
- Have not previously failed the CBE for the course
- Registration for C.B.E.:
For all students who wish to CBE a course the process is the same. You will be registered for all of the courses you would normally be taking in the upcoming semester as identified on your personal degree plan whether you CBE or not. The CBE exams generally occur about a month before the courses begin but the results are often not available till registration is in process, so we register you in each course to be sure you have a space in the course just in case your CBE process is not successful. Therefore, you will end up needing to go through drop and add to drop the course(s) you pass by CBE. At that time, if you wish, you may also add other courses you are then qualified to take having passed a prerequisite by CBE as space permits.
- For On-going Students: Please indicate your intent to credit by exam each course by notifying the Director of Flexible Process. The CBE schedule will be posted online (under schedules and syllabus on our home page) prior to registration. Information concerning specific courses may be obtained through the course packet and the specific Course Coordinator as well as the Director of Flexible Process.
- For Newly Admitted Students: Credit by Exam is available for all second and third semester Flex courses and Pharmacology in Semester I. Admission to the program is required to participate in the CBE process. The exams occur about a month before the courses start so you will want to contact us as soon a you know you are interested in CBE so you can be included in the process.
- CBE Fees:
There is a specific charge for each CBE. If the CBE is passed, that is the only fee charged in order for the student to receive credit for the course. If the CBE is not passed the student will need to take the course and will incur the normal tuition fee for the course. CBE fees must be paid prior to sitting for the exam and may be paid by cash or check in the Chronic Nursing Department (M-F 7:30-5:00). Checks should be made out to UTHSCSA. Please bring your receipt to the exam as proof of payment. (If you are coming from out of town and are not routinely on campus you may pay the day of the exam in the Chronic Nursing Department - plan 15 minutes extra for this process so that you will be able to start the exam on time)
- For clinical courses the charge for CBE is $50.00.
- For or non-clinical courses the charge for CBE is $25.00.
- General course information (text used in the course, a general list of course content, overall course objectives, faculty coordinating the course, etc.) is available online (link to Schedules and Syllabus from our homepage). Specific course information (weekly class objective, specific reading assignments, etc.) and specific Credit by Examination information for the course is available in each course packet. These may be obtained in the Chronic Nursing Department (M-F 7:30-5:00). There is a minimal charge for these to cover the cost of copying. Textbooks are available in the bookstore or may be ordered online and may also often be found used - be sure you have the edition identified in the course syllabus.
- Results of written exams and papers will be emailed to students. Limited feedback is given on C.B.E. activities as these are not considered teaching activities.
- Requirements for progression through the C.B.E. process may be completed early; THEY WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED LATE. Failure to comply with the dates and times scheduled will be interpreted as the student's decision to terminate the C.B.E. process. Exceptions will be granted only for unusual or uncontrollable circumstances, by arrangement with the Director Flexible Process or the Chair of the Department of Chronic Nursing Care or other designated faculty member prior to the scheduled date.
- The student who successfully completes requirements for the course(s) for which he/she has registered, before the last day to add a course, will be eligible to register for the subsequent required course(s). However, there are a limited number of student slots available for all required clinical courses. The majority of those slots are reserved for students who register on or before the regular registration date; late registrations will be accepted until the available slots have been filled.
The student who registers late must also make arrangements with the Associate Dean for the Undergraduate Program for revising his/her program plan.
- The student is advised to read the section regarding credit by examination and the section regarding repetition of a failed course in the UTHSCSA catalog. The policies regarding granting and recording of credit and/or grades earned by the credit by exam process are particularly significant.
- A student who is not successful in attempting a course by CBE should be prepared to take that course the same semester or the next semester. Therefore, students are strongly advised NOT to attempt CBE unless they are certain they can take the course within the current or subsequent semester if CBE is unsuccessful.
- The student who completes a course or courses via the C.B.E. process is responsible for keeping informed about School of Nursing activities if she/he does not attend classes during a given semester. Checking the student mailbox, personal UTHSCSA email, and Flexible Process bulletin board at least once a week should be scheduled throughout the semester.
