NURS 3208-001 Care of Childbearing Families: Clinical Application

Welcome to NURS 3208, Care of Childbearing Families: Clinical Applications
You will begin the semester by attending Clinical Skills Lab, beginning on August 30, 2018. The focus of the lab will be on Clinical Orientation. The orientation session is considered a clinical activity, therefore, it is MANDATORY. Please complete the designated homework, which is posted on Canvas and bring it with you to this lab. It is your "ticket" into the lab. Please note that the clinical agencies require you to have a current CPR card and all required immunizations. This includes the Flu vaccine and TB testing. This is a mandatory requirement and you will not be allowed to attend clinical if not in compliance.
Clinical Skills lab will be held every THURSDAY for the first four weeks of the semester. The hospital clinical rotation will begin after completion of all required skills labs. You will have the opportunity to participate in many different clinical activities, both in the Acute Care and Community settings. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to complete multiple simulation scenarios. Please refer to the 3207/3208 combined course calendar posted on Canvas for further details

This course provides opportunity for clinical application of holistic care of women and their families during the childbearing years with emphasis on health promotion and risk reduction.
CREDIT AND TIME ALLOCATION
2 semester hours (2 hours clinical)
Corequisites: NURS 3207-Care of Childbearing Families: Theoretical Foundations.
At the completion of the baccalaureate program the student will demonstrate the following:

9. Apply strategies for health promotion and disease management specific to the needs of the childbearing family. (Essential IX)
CRITERIA FOR EVALUATION / GRADES
Satisfactory completion of all course (clinical) objectives is required, including satisfactory submission of all written assignments
Each student is expected to complete a comprehensive plan of care on the Childbearing Family and achieve the designated benchmark outlined on the grading rubric
Additionally, each student is expected to successfully demonstrate required competencies, as specified in the course packet and posted on Canvas. If a student is unable to demonstrate the required clinical skills and competencies during the assessment/testing session, he/she will be allowed to re-mediate and re-test. The student is responsible for scheduling an appointment to attend remediation sessions. Clinical time will not be used for remediation and re-testing, and hours spent during remediation will not count toward clinical hours of the course. If a student is unable to satisfactorily demonstrate the required clinical competencies/skills after remediation, he/she will not be allowed to participate in the clinical practicum
Clinical Faculty may assign other activities to ensure that a student has met all course objectives. Clinical written assignments will be due 72 hour post clinical day.
CELL PHONE POLICY
- Respect for classroom and clinical communication processes are necessary for teaching and learning.
- Silence mobile devices / cell phones in classrooms and clinical settings.
- Remove Bluetooth devices prior to entering the classroom and when in ANY clinical setting.
- Failure to do so can / will / may (depending on the faculty) either affect your class participation, clinical or final course grade.
- If written assignments are made in a course they are required.
- Students are expected to submit written work on the scheduled date and time.
- The student must notify the course coordinator prior to the scheduled due date and time if they are unable to submit the written work as scheduled. Failure to make this notification in advance will result in a "zero" for that written work.
- If the excuse is accepted as reasonable and necessary, arrangements will be made for an alternative due date and time.
- Each student is responsible for making sure that he or she has completed the written work prior to submission.
- Late work will be accepted with consequences as outlined per course syllabi.
The APA Publication Manual 6th edition is required for use in all nursing school programs.

Regents Rules and Regulations, Part One, Chapter VI, Section 3, Subsection 3.2, Subdivision 3.22.

The first day of clinical activities will be held on Thursday, August 30, 2018 for Clinical and Course Orientation. Attendance is Mandatory.
After this initial orientation, students will be assigned to a morning or afternoon skills lab. The assignments will be made after the final determination of clinical group placements. Students are required to attend skills lab every Thursday for the first four weeks of the semester. Additionally, students will be assigned varied clinical activities, such as simulation, which may also occur on a Thursday throughout the semester.
Hospital clinical rotations will begin on the assigned designated day after completion of required skills labs. Hospital rotation schedule will vary by group.
