Mission and Background

The Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International, is an international, professional organizational whose mission is to support learning, knowledge and professional development of nurses committed to making a difference in health worldwide.  The honor society was founded in 1922 by six nursing students at Indiana University in the United States of America.

Since 1922, more than 400,000 nursing students and professionals have been inducted into membership by 446 chapters in 15 regions and 17 countries including Australia, Botswana, Brazil, Canada, Ghana, Hong Kong, Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands, Pakistan, South Africa, South Korea, Swaziland, Sweden, Taiwan, Tanzania and the United States.  In addition, more than 25 organizations including the World Health Organization, Johnson & Johnson, People to PeopleAmbassador Program, and others, have partnered with the honor society.

Throughout the honor society’s history, its members’ commitment to knowledge, learning and service has guided the honor society in achieving many milestones and firsts in the nursing profession:

  • Awarded the first nursing research grants.
  • Published the first scholarly nursing journal now
    named Journal of Nursing Scholarship.
  • Implemented the first philanthropic campaign,
which resulted in funding the Center for Nursing Scholarship.
  • Developed the first electronic library of nursing research and knowledge; it is named the Virginia Henderson International Nursing Library.
  • Embraced membership and chapters outside the United States.
  • Published the first knowledge synthesis and internal peer-reviewed evidence-based practice journal named Worldviews on Evidence-Based Nursing.
