Sigma Theta Tau International was founded in 1922 by six nurses at Indiana University. These nurses chose the name Sigma Theta Tau for their organization from the initials of the Greek words Storga, Tharos, and Tima (Love, Courage, and Honor). Sigma Theta Tau grew out of these women's recognition of the value of scholarship and the importance of excellence in practice and a desire to build a framework to encourage future leaders in nursing. Since its inception in 1922, Sigma Theta Tau International has grown to more than 120,000 active members of 406 international chapters in 90 countries and territories.
Delta Alpha Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International located at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA) was chartered in 1979 as the ninety-fifth chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International and currently boasts over 1000 members. Originally, the UTHSCSA School of Nursing was affiliated with the University of Texas School of Nursing in Galveston, whose Sigma Theta Tau chapter is Alpha Delta. After the UTHSCSA School of Nursing became an independent school of nursing they wanted to charter their chapter of Sigma Theta Tau as Delta Alpha (reversing the order of the original chapter's name.) As luck would have it and with some swift negotiation, the UTHSCSA School of Nursing was chartered as Delta Alpha.
In 2004, Delta Alpha Chapter became a Chapter-at-Large partnering with the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) School of Nurisng in a historic cermony at the UIW Skyview Room. The Chapter recently celebrated its 35th anniversary, continues to provide its members with opportunities for collegial exchange, mentoring, leadership development and professional growth.
