Master of Science in Nursing (MSN)

The master's program is a minimum of 36 semester hours providing the opportunity for specialization in nursing. Nurses are prepared to contribute to the health care delivery system, as well as, the profession through courses in:
  • Issues and theory
  • Research fundamentals
  • Concentrated courses in major clinical disciplines

Curriculum content is updated and modified to meet changing health care needs and to keep pace with advances in technology.

Within the courses, students can meet many of their individual learning goals and pursue interests appropriate to the content of each course.

Admission criteria:

  • BSN
  • Basic statistics course
  • Licensure as a Registered Nurse in Texas
  • Grade Point Average of "B" (3.0 on a 4.0 scale) or higher preferred
  • PhD students ONLY - 1,000 on the Graduate Record Examination General (Aptitude) Test (verbal and quantitative sections) preferred or 50 or higher (or 400 & higher) on the Miller Analogies Test (scores not more than five (5) years old. NO MAT / GRE required for Masters students.
    The scores must not be more than five (5) years old.
  • Ability to obtain professional liability insurance coverage.
  • Ability to pass criminal background check.
  • Four (4) satisfactory references
  • Proof of Current CPR Certification
  • Proof of Current Immunizations
  • Proof of Current health insurance
  • Basic computer skills
  • Professional goal statement

Admission is available for the Fall and the Spring semesters. Admission for all majors is competitive.

Admission to the Graduate Nursing Program is based on the consideration of multiple criteria including, but not limited to grade point average (GPA), standardized test scores, professional goal statement, and references.

Study options:

  • Full-time and part-time study is available
  • Depending on the major, the semester hours to complete the program range from 36 - 47
  • One and 1/2 years to 2 years of full-time study to complete the program
  • All work toward the degree must be completed within five (5) years

Associate Degree in Nursing/Diploma in Nursing -
Master of Science in Nursing

Registered nurses who have an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) or a Diploma in Nursing may be eligible for early admission to the Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree program. Through a combination of prior credits in nursing education, college credits in liberal arts courses and upper-division course work from the School of Nursing, individuals may qualify to begin work toward the master's degree and complete the requirements for the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree in the progress. Individuals may challenge upper-division undergraduate nursing courses for credit by examination or complete the courses as regular courses on campus. The BSN and MSN degrees are awarded simultaneously at the end of the program.

Admission criteria:

  • ADN or Diploma in Nursing from an accredited program
  • Licensure as a Registered Nurse in Texas
  • Minimum of 62 semester hours of prescribed general education/liberal arts courses
  • All additional requirements for admission to MSN program of study

Study options:

  • Full-time and part-time study is available
  • In addition to the MSN course work, initially upper-division undergraduate courses must be completed and may be done in two (2) semesters.
