Preparing Cliical Nurse Scientists PhD Program in Nursing

The School of Nursing, at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, seeks highly motivated students interested in integrating clinical research as a part of their academic, institutional or community-based career trajectory. The campus offers a rich research environment. The 80 hour program of study includes courses in philosophy and ethics, qualitative and quantitative research methods, professional role, and clinical applications of research. Students may enter the program at the post-BSN or post-MSN level. The University campus is a rich research environment that includes the Cancer Research and Treatment Center, The Children’s Cancer Research Center, the Aging Research and Education Center, the General Clinical Research Center and an active Diabetes Prevention Program. The School of Nursing is a federally designated Hispanic serving program. Many faculty and student research studies address health disparities in minority and other at-risk population groups. Four Centers of Excellence: Center for Violence Prevention (CVP), Center for Community-Based Health Promotion in Women and Children (CCHP), Academic Center for Evidence-Based Practice (ACE), and MESA: Center for Health Disparities provide forums for research development, implementation and dissemination. Clinical research is mentored by nurse investigators and interdisciplinary scientists engaged in the following focal areas:

  • Domestic violence & abuse against women
  • Preterm labor prevention
  • Sexually transmitted diseases
  • Health Disparities
  • Cardiovascular risk-reduction, physical activity & weight management
  • Growth & nutrition enhancement in childhood & infancy
  • Diabetes Management
  • Adolescent risk behaviors


The doctoral program is offered at the School of Nursing at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.
