Minor Options

The School of Nursing offers minors in three areas Teaching of Nursing, Nursing Administration and Nursing Informatics. Any of these courses may be taken for elective credit.


Teaching of Nursing

NURS 5371 Curriculum and Instruction in Nursing
This course is designed to introduce students to the various components in curriculum and instruction process. The significance of the development of a philosophy, objectives, conceptual framework, and evaluation strategies are explored. Teaching/learning principles as well as education research findings are incorporated. Factors that influence the role of the nurse educator in such settings as nursing education, staff development, and continuing education are examined.
Credit Hour Allocation: 3 semester hours: 3 semester hours class
Prerequisites: None

NURS 5372 Roles of the Teacher in Nursing
This course focuses on the investigation of the roles of the educator in contemporary nursing. The course provides the opportunity to design, implement, and evaluate learning experiences in settings such as nursing programs, staff development, and/or continuing education. Emphasis is on the application of teaching, learning, and evaluation strategies.
Credit Hour Allocation: 3 semester hours: 2 semester hours class every other week, 2 practicum simulation hours every other week, and 5 practicum hours average per week.

Nursing Administration

NURS 5310 Administrative Strategies and Nursing Systems
This course examines contemporary influences, theories, principles, and functional strategies related to organizational and managment science. Included are the influence of the external and internal envirionment on complex systems, role relationships, planning, structure communication, negotiation, and consultation, as they apply to healthcare managment concerns.
Credit Hour Allocation: 3 semester hours class: 3 clock hours class

NURS 5501 Financial Management and Decision Support Systems for Nursing Administrative Practice
This course considers advanced financial managment concepts (financial statements, capital budgeting, forecasting, rate setting, costing out of nursing services) and is an introduction to the concepts of decision support systems in the administration of community and healthcare services.
Credit Hour Allocation: 3 semester hours class: 3 clock hours class; 2 semester hours practicum: 6 clock hours practicum

NURS 5310 Administrative Strategies and Nursing Systems

Nursing Informatics

NUR 5315 Information Systems in Healthcare and Nursing
This course is an introduction to the healthcare and nursing computing environment. Information applications that affect healthcare and nursing will be emphasized. Strategic planning, selecting key personnel for the development team, determining and communicating information needs, staff education, administrative uses of information systems, and the legal/ethical issues of clinical information systems and the computerized patient record are discussed. The roles of the clinical professionals in this process are emphasized.
Credit Hour Allocation: 3 semester hours: 2.5 semester class hours; 0.5 semester hour practicum
Prerequisites: Graduate standing and demonstration of prerequisite beginning computer competencies.

NURS 5317 Practice and Knowledge in Health Care and Nursing Informatics
This course provides a basis for understanding the impact of the Information Age and Technology on health care practice. The relationship of knowledge development in health science and the nature and structure of human knowledge are explored as a basis for critical thinking. Theoretical and applied approaches furnish a basis for understanding and participating in the development of informatics systems in health care and nursing. Emphasis is on the use of technology to access knowledge and to create research based practice protocols for informed clinical decision making in health care and nursing.
Credit Hour Allocation: 3 semester hours: 2.5 semester hours class; 0.5 semester hours practicum
Prerequisites: Graduate standing and demonstration of prerequisite beginning computer competencies.
