UT Health Science Center School of Nursing
Education
- A contemporary clinical skills lab equipped with state of the art
simulated technology to prepare our students to practice in today's complex critical
care hosptials.
- Nursing Leadership for the Work Environments of Tomorrow
- During a time when the nursing shortage is escalating, we plan to educate the future
nursing leaders in "Magnet-Like Work Environments" so that they may be
the role models of tomorrow.
- Teaching and Research Scholars Program

America will need 1,200,000 nurses
by 2014 -nurses trained to deliver high-quality, science-based care. This program
is designed to grow our future educators and researchers by developing a mentoring
relationship between faculty, students and collaborating partners. Students at all
levels (undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral) will be provided with exposure to
and exploration of knowledge building through research.
Research
Cancer Survivorship
Nurses focus on the person and not just the disease.
- Through collaboration with our health science center cancer researchers at the medical and graduate schools, the school of nursing is driven to articulate the concerns of cancer survivors and develop interventions to improve the quality of their survivorship.
- Health Disparities and Health Promotion
- The school of nursing is striving to be the model for the integration of health promotion, research, education and practice. Our nurse faculty research is focused on rural, at-risk and/or underserved populations of women, children, families, and elderly populations. We are conducting research that addresses the reduction of health disparities through health promotion and health restoration by developing culturally appropriate research methods for addressing the impending chronic illnesses this population may face.
- Nursing Workforce Health
- The collision between two simultaneous forces of increasing nurse retirements and increasing demand for nursing services to care for an aging population. Our faculty are working with both local and national healthcare facilities on addressing this issue by focusing on the current work environment, the impact of technology, and the inter-personal relationships of nurses with colleagues, supervisors, and the public.
Scholarship
- One of our biggest concerns is the level of indebtedness incurred by our nursing students. Our focus is finding innovative ways of financing their tuition so nursing graduates do not come out of nursing school with the burden of scholastic debt.

- To address the needs of the students, we have developed the Living Endowment Scholarship Program to ensure those individuals with a desire to become nurses are afforded the opportunity—regardless of personal financial capabilities. (Details

Community Outreach
- Last year, our undergraduate and graduate nursing students provided over $6 million of uncompensated health care services to over 100,000 people in the San Antonio area. By providing this outreach, our students are gaining the skills that they need to be the best and the brightest while educating a population in need of their services.
- In 2007, we began collaboration with a local daycare facility to provide much needed care to the children at Avance, Inc. It is the hope of the school that the services provided to these children, by our faculty and students, will be expanded upon in order to meet the needs of the entire family.
Growing our Endowment
In answer to the needs of our students, we strive to establish perpetual endowments that not only grow the number of students gifted with the opportunity to achieve their dreams. But also provide them with the education resources needed to be the best healthcare provider possible. (Details)
