NURS 7321 Statistical Analysis for Quality Improvement and Health Delivery Systems
This course examines the concepts and techniques to develop, improve, and evaluate patient care and health care delivery systems from multiple perspectives including efficiency, effectiveness, and comparability. Students are provided with essential knowledge for evaluation of research to guide evidence-based practice at the highest level. This course provides an overview of the logic and appropriate use of statistical techniques most commonly reported in the research literature of the health professions. Students build on knowledge they have gained from basic statistics courses to develop advanced skills in interpreting and understanding common univariate and multivariate statistical approaches presented in published health care reports. Using a project-oriented approach, students are provided with statistical tools necessary to conduct state-of-the-art practice improvement projects and support leadership decisions.

Clock Hour Allocation: 3 Clock Hours Class (45 hours class)
- Demonstrate understanding of studying and measuring variation in daily work and the application of that work to the improvement of patient care.
- Demonstrate the ability to construct, evaluate, and improve quality measures.
- Develop skill in displaying data in a format that is clearly understood.
- Understand underlying concepts of temporal measurement display and analysis of data, such as run charts and control charts, and their specific usefulness for different types of quality indicators.
- Demonstrate understanding, ability to choose, use, and interpret common statistical analyses used in quality improvement project and evaluation of health delivery systems.
- Critically appraise research reports with an emphasis on statistical interpretation.
- Develop skills in analyzing datasets and presenting data for improvement work.
Attendance in class is an expectation of each student.
- If written assignments are made in a course they are required.
- Students are expected to submit written work on the scheduled date and time.
- The student must notify the course coordinator prior to the scheduled due date and time if they are unable to submit the written work as scheduled. Failure to make this notification in advance will result in a "zero" for that written work.
- If the excuse is accepted as reasonable and necessary, arrangements will be made for an alternative due date and time.
- Each student is responsible for making sure that he or she has completed the written work prior to submission.
- Late work will be accepted with consequences as outlined per course syllabi.
The APA Publication Manual 6th edition is required for use in all nursing school programs.
