COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course is designed to assist students in customizing care for Spanish speaking patients and/or families.  This course will focus on the verbal elements of Spanish pronunciation and grammar to assist students in the application of the nursing process with Spanish speaking patients and/or families.  Cultural theory will be analyzed and integrated in providing care for Spanish speaking patients.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

This course provides the student with the opportunity to:

  1. Apply the nursing process while providing customized care to Spanish speaking patients and/or families.
  2. Participate as partners to customize patient care by communicating in the primary language of the patient and/or patient's families.
  3. Demonstrate proficiency in the basic verbal elements of Spanish communication.
  4. Use critical thinking skills in designing and implementing comprehensive care to Spanish speaking patients and/or families.
  5. Apply cultural theory and research findings in providing care for Spanish speaking patients and/or families.
  6. Participate in professional and collaborative partnerships as needed.
  7. Demonstrate understanding of ethical and legal implications by recognizing own limitations in communicating in Spanish.
  8. Demonstrate active participation in integrated learning processes.

    In addition, the Graduate student will:
  9. Analyze research related to Hispanics' communication problem.

CRITERIA FOR EVALUATION / GRADES
  1. Successful completion of this course requires that the student complete a quiz, midterm, and final examination and a critique of an article on Spanish speaking patients or Hispanic culture with an average of 70% of points achieved.
  2. Graduate students prepare a formal paper, 3 to 5 pages, on a selected group of the Hispanic population.
  3. The course grade will be determined as follows:
Undergraduate Graduate Letter grade will be based upon 100 points.

CONCEPTS:

Professionalism: By learning Spanish, students will be able to apply the nursing process in a manner that the patient and/or family understands in order to enhance quality of life and assist the patient to achieve optimal health. The student will be responsible for and accountable to the patient and/or family to assess, plan, provide, and evaluate nursing care across the life span.

Scholarship: The student will demonstrate scholarship by demonstrating the Spanish knowledge needed for providing nursing care to patients and/or families who only speak Spanish.  The student will be able to respond to the specific human and societal needs of the Spanish speaking patient.

Integrated Learning: This course will require that the student actively participate in learning and demonstrate their knowledge base by communicating effectively with Spanish speaking patients.  It will provide cultural theory and research findings so the student will be prepared to synthesize information from various disciplines, analyze critically, and communicate effectively.

Customization: This course will help the student customize the care management and delivery for Spanish speaking patients.  This course will give the student an opportunity to customize patient care in the primary language of the patient.
