NURS 4512 Professional Nursing; Health Promotion

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The nurses' role in the individual patient's experience of heath is addressed in this course. Factors contributing to people's definition and understanding of health and their health practices are examined within an ecological framework. The dynamic partnership between nurse and patient will be explored. A strong emphasis will be placed on health assessment, advocacy, and education for health promotion, risk reduction, and disease prevention across the lifespan.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

  1. Apply nursing process to promote health, reduce risk, and prevent disease.
  2. Participate as partners with patients in customized care, including the socio-cultural, biological,  physical, and politico-economical environmental context related to health promotion, risk reduction, and disease prevention.
  3. Apply therapeutic communication skills with patients when engaged in health promotion, risk reduction, and disease prevention.
  4. Demonstrate critical thinking as the basis for professional practice.
  5. Apply theory and research findings to health promotion, risk reduction, and disease prevention.
  6. Collaborate with patients to promote health and reduce risk.
  7. Demonstrate ethical and legal behavior that reflects professional standards.
  8. Demonstrate role development activities and strategies.
