1976
Patricia Starr, BSN, RN, is enjoying her retirment by running her Parish’s food pantry with her husband Dave Starr. They are both active members of the American Legion as well as Friends of the Library.
Dolores “Maggie” Varona, MSN, RN, has obtained her MSN from the University of the Incarnate Word. She is enjoying her retirment from University Hospital, where she was a Nursing Director with 27 years of service. |

Jane Dimmit Champion, PhD, RN is currently a professor at UTHSCSA School of Nursing. Dr. Champion has received an NIDA summer research supplement award for underrepresented minority students.
Sara Gill , PhD, RN is currently a professor at UTHSCSA School of Nursing. Dr. Gill along with fellow School of Nursing faculty member Dr. Cathy Robichaux, and Jean Petershack (neonatologist) have been awarded a 2007 Scholarship of Teaching Grants Award of $4,865. Their proposal title was "Interdisciplinary Education in Palliative Care."
Corrine Sherman, RN, MSN, PhD, is enjoying her retirement from her faculty position with the University of Texas Health Science Center School of Nursing.

Lynn N. Eisberg, BSN, RN, is currently a Research Nurse/ Asst. Trainer at Stanford Blood Center- in Standford School of Medicine’s Dept. of Pathology
Dorthoy Linder, MSN, RN is currently a school nurse with Comfort ISD
Norma Martinez-Rogers , PhD, RN is currently a professor at UTHSCSA School of Nursing. Sr. Martinez-Rogers has had both the Juntos Podemos and the Avanzar grants renewed for a total of $277,616. She has also received another HRSA grant of $36,655 for student scholarships.

Karen McMurry, BSN, RN, worked as a nurse untill 1982, then attended law school. Since 1985 she has represented health care providers in medical malpractice cases and currently functions as the Vice President of legal services and risk management with Unversity Health Systems.
Ellen Ott, BSN, RN, has established her own non-profit: Under the Bridge. She is currently retired from the Army Nurse Corp, as well as President of Volkssport Club & Acting President of the Texas Volkssport Association
Charles Sheeley, BSN, MSN, APN, FASCCP, was admitted as a Fellow to the American Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology in Decemebr 2006 |

Barbara Owens, MSN, RN, PhD is currently a professor at UTHSCSA School of Nursing. Dr. Owens was also awarded $5000 by the Nursing Advisory Council (NAC) for her proposal, “Cultural Intersections in the Care of Mexican Americans during the End of Life.” Dr. Owens’ manuscript, "A Test of the Self-Help Model and Use of Complementary and Alternative Medicine Among Hispanic Women During Treatment for Breast Cancer", has been published in Oncology Nursing Forum (34) 4, 2007.

Dianne Beckman-Mendez, MSN, RN, PhD is currently a Professor at UTHSCSA School of Nursing. Dr. Beckman-Mendez has also been awarded a $750 MARC Travel Award and Registration grant to attend the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB) Minority Access to Research Careers (MARC) Programs and the grant writer’s seminar craftsmanship training program on August 10, 2007.
Maggie Schulenburg, MSN, RN is currently a critical care educator at Northeast Methodist. Ms. Schulenburg is also featured in the April/June 2007 issue of Critical Care Nursing Quarterly. The topic is hypertensive emergencies. Ms. Schulenburg has also just been given the opportunity to design an issue of Critical Care Nursing Quarterly that will be published next year. |

2001
Congratulations to Pam Hodges, MSN, RN, who recently received both a fellowship award and a committee meeting grant. The Nurses for a Healthier Tomorrow Faculty Fellowship will provide her with $1300 for her tuition, fees, and books as she prepares for a career as nurse educator. She also received a $1000 scholarship to attend the American Association of Heart Failure Nurses Annual meeting in San Diego, June 26-28, 2008. Ms. Hodges is currently a Professor at UTHSCSA School of Nursing

Dr. Margit Gerardi, PhD is currently a Professor at UTHSCSA School of Nursing. Dr. Gerardi along with, fellow School of Nursing faculty member, Dr. Margaret Brackley were awarded a Nursing Advisory Council grant for $4750 to develop baseline data for risk behavior, victimization, trauma, and family functioning in minority children who have been exposed to violence; and to assess the culture and age appropriateness for four data collection instruments for Latino, African-American, and Caucasian (non-Hispanic) youth. Mary Beth Griffith, MSN, RN has been working part-time at Augusta Pediatrics, private pediatrician’s office. The Griffith family has been expanding; they now have 3 kids under the age of 4!
Lindsay H Rensberger, is currently living in Wasatch Mountains in northern Utah where she has just finished her first year working as a contractor for the U.S. Air Force. She is employed as a Utilization Manager for the health clinic at Hill Air Force Base.

2006
Adelita Cantu, PhD, is currently a Professor at UTHSCSA School of Nursing. Dr. Cantu also received a $2000 grant to fund Salsa Caliente: Evaluation of a Healthy Lifestyles Program on African and Mexican Americans at Risk for Diabetes and Its Complications. This project will be a collaboration between the Texas Diabetes Institute and the UTHSCSA School of Nursing.Dr. Cantu was additionally awarded a travel award to do a poster presentation of the Salsa Caliente project at the 5th National Health Disparities Conference: Diabetes Health Disparities: Determinants, Prevention, Treatment and Policy, held in Nashville, TN, November 12-13, 2007.
James Patterson, BSN, RN, Army Reserve Staff Sgt., was featured in the San Antonio Express News on January 26, 2007, in which they highlighted his dedication to obtaining his BSN even though he was deployed twice during his program. Staff Sgt. Patterson is currently an LVN at Brook Army Medical Center, on the ICU step-down unit where he has worked since 2000. He will take his registered- nursing state boards soon and is applying for commissioned-officer status.
