COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course is designed to facilitate student understanding of, and participation in, the role of the nurse as a member of the profession. Didactic content will be provided covering the importance of nursing’s value driven involvement in it’s professional governance; in the mission, goals, membership and processes of professional organizations and schools; and the leadership and membership roles and benefit  of students in professional student organizations. Practicum experiences include participation in student governance, active roles in professional student organizations, representation on School of Nursing and Health Science Center committees, and mentoring activities. All students will begin with the didactic and practicum parts of the course however students involved over several semesters in practicum activities may continue to register for the practicum component alone as indicated by the hours they have committed to their practicum roles (up to two credit hours a semester).

ELEMENTS DEVELOPED

Partnership

This elective exposes students to three areas of professional partnership; professional organizations, universities and schools of nursing, and student governance; as well as an operational introduction to mentoring.  Development of the professional value of service to the profession through partnership will be stressed didactically and realized actively through practicum experiences where students will be directly involved in assuming individual professional partnership roles as class officers, student professional organization members and officers, school of nursing and university committee student representatives, mentors in outreach programs such as Med Ed., and other select activities.

Customization

This elective provides students the opportunities to self select and tailor their practicum activities based on their areas of interest. Faculty will provide multiple options that currently exist within UTHSCSA that students may lobby for. Students may also explore opportunities beyond currently established roles and seek approval from faculty to assume those roles.

Professionalism

The AACN Essentials of Baccalaureate Education identify three nursing roles baccalaureate nurses are prepared to assume. One of the three roles is the nurse as member of the profession. This elective focuses very specifically on this role through student assumption of professional leadership, representation and mentoring roles. A second role identified is the nurse as manager and leader. This elective also builds understanding of the operational management of professional schools, universities and professional organizations as well as their leadership.

Transition

This elective affords students the opportunity to build skills and understanding about organizational governance, leadership and nursing representation that should facilitate their success in transitioning from student to professional. Students assume components of the professional role while in the student role thus beginning their transition within a supportive academic environment. The mentoring role itself facilitates transitions from primary and secondary students interested in nursing, to college and university students taking pre-requisites for nursing school, to student nurses in each semester in the program, to graduate nursing student sitting for NCLEX, to practicing RN.

Integrated Learning

This elective challenges students to synthesize many theoretical areas (such as leadership, management, communication, motivation, conflict resolution, consensus building, and group process) for application to realize their selected governance, representation and mentoring roles. Prior organizational representation, governance, and mentoring experiences may serve as the foundation for student’s choices in selecting experiences (or for being selected for those positions attained through elections) and will be discussed for reflective learning and comparative purposes in class. Group discussions of roles, challenges and opportunities, and lessons learned, will provide the class with a broader view of the scope of the role of nurse as member of the profession than any one students experience in isolation would afford.
