The SHC is located on the ground floor of the School of Nursing in room 1.422. The SHC provides comprehensive healthcare services for over 3,600 students enrolled at The UT Health Science Center San Antonio.
The seven SHC nurse practitioners hold dual roles as Advance Practice Nursing faculty and help to educate and train advanced practice nursing students by serving as preceptors and role models to students enrolled in the nurse practitioner program at the UT School of Nursing. These nurse practitioners work in collaboration with the Behavioral Health Department to provide comprehensive healthcare services to the students at the UT Health Science Center. Two collaborating physicians provide chart review and consultation.
The Student Health Advisory Committee and Governance Committee advise the SHC in a consultative capacity and is made up of faculty, staff, and student representatives who meet on a periodic basis to evaluate the performance and make recommendations on policies, procedures, and programs necessary to address the unique needs of the students at the Health Science Center. See the Student Health Center website for further information. Your student fees support the infrastructure of the Student Health Center including basic triage provided by the RN and Medical Assistants, TB evaluation, clinic management, supplies, and equipment. Advanced Practice Nursing (nurse practitioner) care is funded through third party billing and relevant co-payments.

UT Nursing Clinical Enterprise Community Initiatives
Avance San Antonio
The UT Health Science Center San Antonio School of Nursing / Avance Community Partnership Clinic is located within
the very heart of the high-risk community it serves, 2642 Castroville Road. The
clinic is conveniently located within the same building as one of the five Avance
Early Childhood Head Start Day Cares.
As an organization, Avance has been building the capacity of families and communities
in San Antonio for the last 36 years. Our Clinic has been a strong addition to the
services they provide for their families. Since its inception, the Partnership Clinic
has ensured 100% immunization compliance among the enrolled children. Additionally,
the clinic provides needed well and sick child visits. The clinic has conducted
massive lead screenings in this target area and recently established
a fluoride varnish program.
The clinic also serves as a location where graduate nursing students enrolled in the Pediatric
Nurse Practitioner Program (PNP) integrate learning concepts, develop the advanced practice
role, and engage in providing health promotion services for the children and
their parents.
The Avance/ School of Nursing Partnership clinic is seen as a replicable model for
the development of Head Start Health Homes in Bexar County, the state of Texas,
and the nation. The success of this program has led to a request from Head Start
to expand the model to other San Antonio Head Start facilities. Health Homes
are being created by the UT Nursing Clinical Enterprise in partnership with Head
Start and the San Antonio Independent School district. If funded, the model will
provide a Health Home at each of the seven SAISD elementary schools.
