Frequently Asked Continuing Education Questions
Q: What is meant by an EDI CE program?
A: An ED I program is a planned and scheduled program with a designated date, time and the agenda has been predetermined to include strategies such as lectures, conferences, workshops, distance learning, case discussions and academic courses.

Q:

What is meant by an Ed II CE program?
A: These are self-paced activities that are designed for the learner to work at his/her own pace and at a time that is convenient. Often these are videotapes, audiotapes, readings, correspondence course, and some web courses.

Q:

How many hours of CE do I need for renewal of my nursing license in Texas?
A: 20 hours of continuing education credit is required for licensure renewal.

Q:

Can I carry over my contact hours to the next renewal period if I have more that I need for current renewal?
A: No. The continuing education credit must be earned during the two years immediately preceding renewal of registration.

Q:

Can we do a CE program on our half-hour lunch?
A: No- the program must be at least one contact hour which is 50 consecutive uninterrupted minutes - if you have a 30 minute lunch hour this is impossible.

Q:

Not all nursing education programs qualify for CE credit, why is that?
A: The intent of a continuing education program is to provide information beyond the basic preparation of a nurse. Continuing education programs are designed to promote professional knowledge, improve skills and enhance the quality of care to the client.

Q:

Do orientation program qualify for continuing education credit?
A: Orientation programs focus on the philosophy, goal, policies, procedures, role expectations and physical facilities of the work place, not a program planned to enhance professional practice.

Q:

Do "inservice" programs by my employer qualify for CE?
A: The employer often provides specific information about the work setting; on -the -job training and equipment demonstration. These are not accepted for CE programs which build upon the registered nurse's education and experience.

Q:

Are there specific courses/activities that do not qualify for NCE?
A: As mentioned previously, inservice programs and orientation programs do not qualify. In addition refresher courses that confirm basic competencies into professional practice do not qualify; it is expected continuing education programs offer information beyond the basic. In addition, self improvement, economic courses with a focus on financial gain, investments, retirement, preparing resumes, personal appearance, or liberal art courses are not considered continuing education. Basic CPR is just that, basic and it is expected that the registered nurse know basic CPR.

Q:

How do I know if the CE program I attend is recognized here in Texas?
A:

THE BNE in Texas recognizes the following credentialing agencies for Continuing Education required for the renewal of Texas licensure:

  • American Nurses Credentialing Center (Am. Nurses Association; Texas Nurses Association is approval unit in Texas).
  • American Association of Critical Care nurses
  • American College of Nurse Midwives
  • American Association of Nurse anesthetists
  • National association of Pediatric Nurse Associates & Practitioners
