COURSE DESCRIPTION
The course focuses on nursing issues related to major physical and psychological health transitions of older patients as well as associated social issues. The course emphasizes the customization of healthcare needed by older persons to adapt to stresses unique to this group. Students will explore professionalism as it relates to integrated learning, partnering, and scholarship in providing nursing support for older patients.

COURSE OBJECTIVES
  1. Explore the effects of transitions and integrated learning on healthcare for the aging population.
  2. Discuss the customization of care to assist older people in coping with their unique physical and psychosocial healthcare needs.
  3. Examine the implications of professionalism related to the ANA Standards for Gerontological Nursing Practice.
  4. Relate partnering methods to support and educate the elderly patients and their families.
  5. Explain scholarships as it relates to current and future legislation and social issues affecting the elderly.

Media Review & Analysis Assignment Criteria for Discussion Boards
1.

Compile a log of no more than 15 articles or television/Web presentations per group related to aging.

35 points
2. Identify themes/myths/stereotypes/realities reflected in the review/analysis-citing specific examples
25 points
3. Discuss the positive and negative impacts of the media in each example.
20 points
4.

Identify ways nursing can influence the media portrayal and society's perception of older adults.

Discussion Board Presentation Criteria
Each group will creatively develop & present a thorough coverage of a content topic related to nursing. The use of research and non-research literature to support the presentation is expected.

These are group grades. All group members are expected to participate and contribute to the Discussion Boards. The group is expected to police itself and inform the faculty of non participation/contribution by any members. Anyone not participating will receive a "ZERO" for the assignment.Discussion Groups will be assigned by faculty.  Topics will be assigned by faculty.
