COURSE DESCRIPTION
The theories germane to leadership will be explored in relation to organizational structures and behaviors. These structures and behaviors will be related to the development of leadership styles and policy making within organizations. Emphasis will also be placed on the political and economic forces that influence the development of health policy and professional nursing practice. In addition the basis for the legal dimensions of the nursing practice at the advanced level will be explored.

COURSE OBJECTIVES
  1. Use the process of integrated learning to examine the interrelationships among theories and concepts germane to leadership.
  2. Utilize research findings to evaluate theoretical constructs applicable to leadership.
  3. Analyze how various healthcare delivery systems are organized.
  4. Formulate strategies for professional nurses to provide leadership in the healthcare delivery system.
  5. Analyze common ethical issues in healthcare that affect clients, communities, society and the advanced role of nurses.
  6. Analyze current legal statutes affecting healthcare delivery.
  7. Assess the impact of partnerships with nursing organizations in policy making in the healthcare system and professional nursing practice.
  8. Design a customized plan to effect a change in health policy affecting an identified population.

CRITERIA FOR EVALUATION / GRADES
Grades will be based on the following:
30% - Paper on a healthcare policy that affects nursing practice
20% - Presentation on Philosophy of Leadership
20% - Ethics Case Study
15% - Journal Articles
15% - Participation in discussion in class/online
100% - Total
A = 90-100%
B = 80-89%
C = 70-79%
D = 60-69%
F = Below 60%

SCHOLASTIC DISHONESTY
Students are expected to be above reproach in all scholastic activities. Students who engage in scholastic dishonesty are subject to disciplinary penalties, including the possibility of failure in the course and dismissal from the university. "Scholastic dishonesty includes but is not limited to cheating, plagiarism, collusion, and submission for credit of any work or materials that are attributable in whole or in part to another person, taking an examination for another person, any act designed to give unfair advantage to a student or the attempt to commit such acts." Regents Rules and Regulations, Part One, Chapter VI, Section 3, Subsection 3.2, Subdivision 3.22.
