COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course focuses on the economic impact of fiscal policies in healthcare organizations. The fiscal components of the budgetary process in the healthcare organizations as well as the concepts of costs, skill mix, budget development and marketing will be discussed. Methods of analyzing budget reports will be explored. In addition, the relationship of the economic environment and health care costs and their implications for nursing practice will be examined.

COURSE OBJECTIVES
  1. Examine the impact of fiscal and monetary policy on healthcare organizations.
  2. Discuss methods of organizing healthcare delivery that consider economic and technically efficient use of resources.
  3. Incorporate principles of fiscal management in the development of a budget.
  4. Demonstrate proficiency in the use of a spreadsheet computer program.
  5. Discuss cost concepts and their use in evaluating healthcare practice/clinical alternatives.
  6. Describe healthcare marketing and its potential financial impact on a healthcare organization.

                2 Financial Point papers (FPP)
                1 Set of Excel Problems
40% - 5 page Financial Topic Paper
20% - Classroom and online participation

A = 90-100%
B = 80-89%
C = 70-79%
D = 60-69%
F = Below 60%


The one-page point papers will summarize a financial issue, highlighting a principle from the readings or class discussion. FPP#1 is due Sept. 9, 2008. FPP#2 is due  Sept. 30 , 2008.

One set of Excel Problems will apply financial principles to issues in health care financial management.
Due Oct. 21 , 2008.

The five page financial topic paper will identify a topic in the student's own present or future work environment. The student will analyze the topic using one or more financial concepts discussed in class.

Financial topic paper will be due Nov. 18, 2008. Five points will be deducted for each day the financial topic paper is turned in late.

Classroom participation: The expectation is that work experiences and current readings be used as a basis for classroom discussion for the topic under discussion. Class attendance and WebCT participation is part of this participation. On Campus dates are as follows:  Aug. 26, Oct. 21, Dec. 2, Dec. 9,  2008.

Presentation: The presentations will be as outlined in the presentation guidelines. Presentations will be Dec. 2 & Dec. 9, 2008.
