COURSE DESCRIPTION
"Bridge to Success" is a clinical preceptorship program. A variety of clinical areas within the hospital (e.g. STICU, L&D, pediatrics, newborns, emergency, med-surg., telemetry, etc.) are available to students. The goals of the program are to provide a more intensive one-on-one clinical learning experience with a clinical role model and better prepare the Graduate Nurse to assume the roles of the professional nurse in a more efficient and timely manner. This is an intense "hands on" clinical course and unique in that the administration of the hospital and/or specific unit commits to consistently providing the student with a qualified preceptor. The availability of a dedicated preceptor is mandatory for the student to participate in this course.

CREDIT AND TIME ALLOCATION
3 semester hours may be earned by completing 100 clinical hours plus completing a clinical project
    (requires pre-approval by faculty)

PREREQUISITES
  1. Good academic standing,
  2. Enrolled in the 3rd or 4th semester undergraduate, generic program or senior level flex program,
  3. MUST MEET WITH FACULTY PRIOR TO ENROLLING IN BRIDGE. Students will then be directed to appropriate contact person at University Hospital in order to arrange an interview. Student must be accepted into Bridge and guaranteed a preceptor prior to enrolling in course

COURSE OBJECTIVES
  1. Identify the roles of the professional staff nurse in the __________ unit.
  2. Demonstrate effective time management and organizational skills.
  3. Recognize and appropriately utilize the various members of the healthcare team (including delegation to UAPs) in accordance with the Texas Nursing Practice Act.
  4. Demonstrate basic med-surg competencies safely.
  5. Demonstrate specific competencies unique to the __________ unit as identified by the preceptor.
  6. Demonstrate proficiency with the computer or hard copy charting system.
  7. Demonstrate the ability to make decisions, problem solve, think critically and prioritize in a fast paced, potentially high stress environment.
  8. Demonstrate the ability to provide and direct nursing care for at least _____ patient(s) in the __________ unit. (*The number varies depending on the type of unit.)

A = 90-100%
B = 80-89%
C = 70-79%
D = 60-69%
F = Below 60%

REQUIRED SPECIAL ACTIVITY FOR STUDENTS EARNING 3 HOUR CREDIT: The choice of a specific activity depends somewhat on the unit the student is bridging in. Creativity is welcomed and encouraged. Examples of such activities include:
    - Presenting an in-service on a pertinent topic
    - Development of policies and procedures
    - Presentation of a complex case history


SCHOLASTIC DISHONESTY
Students are expected to be above reproach in all scholastic activities. Students who engage in scholastic dishonesty are subject to disciplinary penalties, including the possibility of failure in the course and dismissal from the university. "Scholastic dishonesty includes but is not limited to cheating, plagiarism, collusion, and submission for credit of any work or materials that are attributable in whole or in part to another person, taking an examination for another person, any act designed to give unfair advantage to a student or the attempt to commit such acts." Regents Rules and Regulations, Part One, Chapter VI, Section 3, Subsection 3.2, Subdivision 3.22.

Mandatory Class Meeting September 26, 2008 1:00 - 2:30 p.m., Room 1.202 - Students must attend prior to starting clinicals.
Students can anticipate starting their clinical hours November 1 - December 7, 2008.  No clinicals allowed on November 11 and November 27, 2008.
